Red Dot X-ray interpretation for Nurses and AHPs

This course gives an insight into the advanced practice of x-ray evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries and other bone and joint abnormalities. The subjects are introduced within a usable format to encourage a standardisation of evaluating images and allow the student an increase in confidence in verbalising observations.

The course will be of interest to Nurses, Paramedics, Physiotherapists and Allied Health Professionals working in an Urgent Care setting.

Day 1

• Legal & professional issues of Advanced Practice
• Red dot/initial report principles
• Imaging Modalities
• Principles of normal and abnormal appearances of bone, soft tissues and joints on X-rays.
• Physiology of bone growth and fracture repair including untreated fractures.
• Fracture classification and description including the juvenile Salter Harris classification.
• ABCs - principles of systematic X-ray interpretation.
• Upper limb X-ray interpretation; theory and application
• Introduction to bony pathological processes including arthritic changes, osteomyelitis and malignancies

Day 2

• Review of images relating to bone pathologies
• X-ray referrals and revision of personal protocols.
• Impact of digital imaging on X-ray interpretation including imaging artefacts that mimic pathology
• Pelvis & hip X-ray interpretation including proximal femur.
• Pre and post-op Assessment of Knee
• Pre and Post-op Assessment of Hip
• Lower limb X-ray interpretation; theory and application
• Facial views
• X-ray interpretation assessment to Red dot level (Upper and Lower limb)
• Review of assessment films.

The teaching and learning within this module should enable students to demonstrate the necessary skills and professional abilities to carry out clinical commenting of the appendicular and axial skeleton appropriate to their scope of practice.

Study will include advanced anatomy and pathophysiology of the Axial and Appendicular skeleton giving the student enriched knowledge to anticipate pathology and gain confidence in applying and verbalising this knowledge in the clinical setting.
