Course Overview
To facilitate nurses working across primary and secondary care environments to use an evidence based approach to the management of leg ulcers.
This is a 1 day course. Leg ulcers affect mortality and morbidity, evidence based knowledge and skills can enhance their management and improve patient outcomes. Health care professionals are in a key position to enhance care through the Evidence Based approach to Leg ulcer management. Action planning will be discussed during the session for how you may achieve competence of your skills in clinical practice.

Introductions and objectives
Anatomy and Physiology of the skin – Pathophysiology - Leg ulcer formation
How to assess a leg ulcer – Strategies and Tools
Treatment regimes
Case Studies – using the evidence
Doppler Ultrasound Technique – Finding Pedal Pulses
Bandaging (review of technique – compression will not be used when practicing in line with Health & Safety )
Course Aims and Outcomes
This is an interactive workshop. The outcomes of the workshop are to enable participants to: ·
- Understand the related Anatomy and physiology of leg ulcer formation
- Understand the pathophysiology and differentiation of Venous and Arterial Leg ulcers
- Critically appraise leg ulcer assessment strategies and tools
- Explore the legal, professional, policy and ethical dimensions in leg ulcer management
- Discuss holistic factors which may impact on healing, concordance and to prevent recurrence.
- Use an Evidence based approach to Diagnostic tools and application of Compression Therapy within scope of professional practice.
