Course Overview

This course will provide ophthalmic professionals with training in prescribing practice that will contribute to knowledge and skills and enhance their career and contribute effectively to their day to practice.

Course Content

Applied anatomy & physiology of the eye - revision

Ophthalmic preparations -Topical applications - mydriatics, drops that create meiosis, anaesthetics, antivirals, steroids -Beta blockers, antibiotics, and topical diagnostic preparations

Subconjunctival injections

IV preparations and Oral medication

Sustained release capsules which sit on the conjunctiva

Conditions from the outside of the eye in e.g. Lids, tear ducts, lashes, conjunctiva, cornea, Anterior Chamber, Sclera, choroid, retina, and the more common drugs used and why particular drugs work better than others depending on the condition - a whistle stop reveiw depending on candidates previous experience.

Pre and post operative preparations - what is used and why

Common side effects and dangers 

From allergies to psychosis, to the least common known dangers of anaesthetic gasses in patients who have had retinal surgery

Using topical applications with patients who wear contact lenses Patient education - how to instil drops/ointment correctly

The law & nurse prescribing - NMC and RCN guidelines (review), Royal College of Ophthalmology interpretation on Nurse Prescribing

Prescribing issues for practitioners - changes in practice e.g. intravitreal injections - discussion on the future of this trend

Research - how has this changed the way we use Ophthalmic preparations

Glaucoma - a case study on how medication and administration has changed

Cost pressures when prescribing treatments
