Course Overview

Advanced treatment options and successful therapies have lead to an increase in survival rates from cancer.Whilst treating patients with cancer they are not only at risk of general emergencies but also specific oncological emergencies.

This 2 day course will cover many of the common oncological emergencies that a patient with a cancer diagnosis may experience.It will cover the incidence, patient groups at risk, diagnosis and initial management of the oncological emergency.The ability to recognise symptoms and alert appropriate health care professionals will also be covered.

Course Content

Overview of Oncological emergencies and definition

Occurrence, diagnosis, management and developments in:

  • Superior Vena Cava Obstruction (SVCO)
  • Spinal Cord Compression (SCC)
  • Sepsis and Severe Sepsis
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
  • Tumour Lysis Syndrome (TLS)
  • Hypercalcaemia Hyper/Hypokalemia
  • Bowel Obstruction/Perforation

Course Aims and Outcomes

  • Enhanced understanding of potential oncological emergencies
  • Develop confidence in recognising an oncological emergency and initiating early interventions
  • Identify which patient groups are at risk for each oncological emergency
