Course Overview

This training course provides theoretical background and practical classroom based training for radiographers undertaking intravenous (IV) administration in an Imaging department. In conjunction with a supervised schedule of administered injections back in the workplace, the course facilitates practical ability in intravenous administration.

Course Content

Applied anatomy and physiology of the upper and lower limb

Venous drainage, surface anatomy, injection sites, fluid compartments, fluid shifts, homeostasis, blood brain barrier

Management of anaphylaxis, reactions emergency equipment and drugs

Infection control and safety issues:

  • Aseptic techniques
  • Disposal of waste
  • Sharps injury

Cannulation and IV administration:

  • Vein selection
  • Correct technique and cannulation workshop

Drawing up and safe administration of agents

Legal and professional responsibility

Course Aims and Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the vascular anatomy of the arm and leg.
  • Perform and be aware of dangers and potential complications of these invasive techniques.
  • To safely work towards competence
