OVERVIEW

This course provides Nurses. Allied Health Professionals and Carers with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and patient-centred care for the patient with a tracheostomy and laryngectomy in a community setting. It offers an integral view of the day-to-day care needs and management of the patient with a long-term tracheostomy and laryngectomy.

AIMS AND OUTCOMES

At the end of this course Ward Nurses and AHP’s will acquire the knowledge and skills that will make them capable to:

  • Understand the anatomical positioning of a tracheostomy.
  • Identify the difference between a tracheostomy and a laryngectomy.
  • Identify the indications for a tracheostomy and laryngectomy.
  • Identify different types of long-term tracheostomy tubes.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and recognise the importance of the day-to-day care needs of a patient with a long-term tracheostomy or laryngectomy.
  • Identify the elements of the Tracheostomy Care Bundle and Best Practice Standards.
  • Identify the differences and provide nutritional support to the patient with a tracheostomy.
  • Demonstrate different methods of communication for a patient with a tracheostomy or laryngectomy.
  • Identify relevant safety equipment required and consumables.
  • Identify emotional and psychological needs of the patient living with a long-term tracheostomy and laryngectomy.
  • Identify and recognise common late complications and red flags of a patient with a long-term tracheostomy or laryngectomy.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and recognise the importance of the Trachi Pass and Tracheostomy Emergency Card.
  • Keeping the patient with a long-term tracheostomy safe in an emergency.
