OVERVIEW

This course will enable participants to develop the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively care for Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs) to enhance patient care.

CONTENT

Indication for Midline, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) or Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs)

Types of CVADs -

  • Acute lines
  • Cuffed Tunnelled lines (Hickman)
  • Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs)
  • Implantable ports (Portocaths)

Infection prevention and Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT)

Drug administration via different Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs)

Flushing and maintaining patency of Central Venous Access Devices (CVADs)

AIMS AND OUTCOMES

By the end of the course, participants will be able to;

  • Explore issues related to the development of nursing practice in respect of central venous cannulation 
  • Discuss the insertion of Central venous Access Devices
  • Discuss the indications for insertion of Central Venous Access Devices
  • List the common types of intravenous therapies infused via a central line in an acute and homecare setting
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the management, care and maintenance of; Midlines, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICC Lines) Cuffed Tunnelled Lines (Hickman Lines) and Implantable Ports (Portocaths) in a hospital setting and at home.
  • Discuss infection prevention and use of aseptic non-touch technique for accessing central venous catheters.
  • Explain the flushing procedures for Central Venous Access Devices
  • Demonstrate the dressing procedures for Central Venous Access Devices
  • Demonstrate and discuss line removal
  • Discuss the possible complications of Central Venous Access Devices and Midlines
  • Outline appropriate interventions to prevent, minimise and manage complications
