Course Overview

Accurate patient assessment is essential to successful leg ulcer management and the aim of this course is to provide evidencebased information to enable the accurate and thorough assessment of patients with venous ulcers. The day also explains the reasons why venous ulcers occur and the specific factors, which influence their development.

The causes of venous leg ulcers
Clinical history and inspection of the skin and ulcer
Doppler measurement of ankle/brachial pressure index (ABPI)
Assessment of circulation and of the lower leg
Ulcer size and accurate measurement
Suitability for compression bandaging
Compression versus no compression
Current rational for compression therapy and type
Pain assessment and relief
Cleansing of the leg ulcer
Dressings and topical agents
Drug treatments
Antimicrobial agents
Skin grafts and skin replacements an overview
Explanation of - Low level laser treatment; Electromagnetic therapy for treating venous leg ulcers; Electrical stimulation and Ultrasound therapy
Prevention of recurrence of ulceration
