Course Overview

The course provides an opportunity to gain insight into pressure ulcer development and prevention. Pressure ulcers cause immeasurable pain and suffering and the majority of them remain preventable across primary, secondary and tertiary care.

The course will be attended by HCAs, HCSWs and Assistant Practitioners.

Course Content

Overview of anatomy and physiology of the skin

Pressure ulcer development

Classification of pressure ulcers - workshop

Pressure ulcer risk assessment

Preventative strategies (including support surfaces, skin assessment, repositioning, incontinence and nutrition - the fundamental aspects of pressure ulcer prevention)

Course Aims and Outcomes

To understand how pressure ulcers develop, recognise early signs and develop skills in skin assessment, risk assessment and implementation of preventative care planning.

  • Identify the layers of the skin to support pressure ulcer classification
  • Understand the role of skin in the prevention of pressure ulcers
  • Consider how pressure ulcers develop and what the associated risk factors are
  • Recognise the legal implications of pressure ulcer development
  • Appreciate the value of risk assessment
  • Identify with the role of Healthcare Support Workers and Healthcare Assistants in the prevention of pressure ulcers
