Phlebotomy (Venepuncture)

Skills training for taking venous blood samples from the arm. On successful completion you will be equipped with underlining theory and skills to gain competence under clinical supervision of a practitioner in your own workplace.

Course Content

Review of anatomy of the arm
Infection control and health & safety
Reasons for and complications of this invasive procedure
Vein selection and demonstration of correct technique, choice of equipment and procedure
Practical skills technique workshop
The management of anaphylaxis
Legal and professional responsibilities
Please note this session may finish at 3pm

Aims/Outcomes

• Demonstrate an understanding of the vascular anatomy of the arm
• Perform and be aware of dangers and complications of this invasive technique
• To safely work towards competence
