Anaesthetics & Recovery Care

Accredited by British Anaesthetics & Recovery Nurses Association (BARNA).

The popular course for anaesthetics and recovery care nurses and operating department practitioners. The three-day programme is an excellent opportunity for theatre professionals to explore current principles in practice. The course is intense but provision will be made to ensure candidates are given every opportunity to develop knowledge and skills.

Review of cardio-respiratory anatomy and physiology
Principles of anaesthesia
Basics of patient management
Preparing for anaesthesia
Patient monitoring
Anaesthesia and systemic disease
Pain management
Anaesthetic drugs - induction agents;
Muscle relaxant and opoids
Exploring modes of action, breakdown, excretion
Recovery care - the importance of observation!
Airway and breathing management
Assessment and monitoring
Caring for the ventilated patient
Circulation: Invasive and non-invasive monitoring
Arterial blood pressure, central venous pressure
Monitoring the ECG, recognising life threatening arrhythmias
Shock - physiological response to stress
Level of consciousness– assessing, monitoring and recording
Post-operative complications; nausea & vomiting; wound drainage, urinary output
Hypovolaemia and principles of intravenous therapy - colloids and crystalloid
Pain management including pharmacology and delivery methods
Review of emergencies – respiratory & cardiac arrest;
Allergic reaction, shock
Legal responsibilities and an overview of current legislation
