Developing Practice in Ophthalmology
This two-day course aims to develop assessment and management skills in ophthalmology and progress towards the competencies required for expanding clinical roles with ophthalmology patients. The programme will appeal to primary and secondary care nurses and allied professionals who work in eye wards, theatres, clinics and satellite clinics.
Course Content
Applied anatomy and physiology of eye
Ocular examination - anterior segment examination including lid eversion
The tear film - estimation and treatment
Tonometry
Pupillary pathways – RAPD and pupil abnormalities
Optic nerve examination
Estimating visual acuity (including colour, reading etc)
Taking and recording an ophthalmic history
Systemic effects of illness on the eye
Ocular movement
Principle of visual fields
Lasers and the eye – including laser safety
Optics and refraction including understanding refractive prescriptions
Principles of biometry and a scanning
Visual pathways – and the effects of abnormalities
Intra and post operative complications of surgery
Pharmacology and the nurse as prescriber
Drops are drugs – applications and instillation, compliance and concordance
Legal and professional issues - consent, the nurse and the law including royal college guidelines, informed consent.
