Gynaecology Assessment and Examination

This evidence-based two-day comprehensive workshop aims to develop clinical knowledge and examination skills of nurses working in primary and secondary care. The course covers all the commonly presenting gynaecological conditions.

Course Content

Commonly presenting condition discussed:
Menstrual disorders
Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Pelvic pain
Genital prolapse and insertion of supporting vaginal
pessaries
Menopausal problems and associated treatments
Vaginal discharge
Problems in early pregnancy
Commonly presenting cancers of the female genital
tract
Abnormal smears and colposcopy
Disorders of the vulva
Problems in early pregnancy
Update on contraception
Clinical skills:
Taking a gynaecological/obstetric history
Bi-manual examination of the female genital tract
Correct insertion of a cuscose speculum
Obtaining a vaginal swabs
Obtaining a cervical screening sample
Assessment of genital prolapse
Fitting of ring pessaries
Correct investigation sampling
Legal and professional considerations

Aims/Outcomes

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of common gynaecological conditions and their management.
  • Develop clinical examination skills of the female genital tract.
  • Anticipate and understand appropriate investigation and treatment of the presenting conditions.
