Providing a more efficient Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) diagnostic and treatment service for pre operative patients

  • Patients with untreated / undiagnosed sleep disordered breathing (SDB) are at an increased risk of perioperative and postoperative complications and it is imperative to have a diagnosis prior to decision to proceed with surgery
  • Patients who were considered a high risk of SDB referred back to General Practitioner to arrange investigation and/or treatment, leading to delay in listing for surgery
  • Patient pathway changed to allow these patients to be referred from the Pre-Operative clinic directly to the Department of Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Department
  • Change process implemented after collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Length of delay of listing patient audited pre and post pathway re-design
