Advanced Emergency Skills Masterclass

Course Content
An essential practical skills masterclass for all healthcare professionals involved in supporting acutely ill patients in hospital and pre-hospital settings.

The morning will include a revision of associated anatomy for the procedures to be practiced and a discussion on the procedures incorporating equipment required, troubleshooting and demonstrations of advanced airway, vascular access and thoracic procedures.

Also advanced skills in context and in relation to medico-legal issues.

The afternoon enhances the day further by facilitating hands-on exposure to the procedures demonstrated in a safe relaxed environment. There are three advanced clinical workshops lead by experienced advanced practitioners:

1. ADVANCED AIRWAY MANAGEMENT
This workshop will focus on supporting with emergency airway procedures including:

  • Needle cricothyroidotomy

  • Surgical airway

  • Airway “tricks of the trade”

  • And will feature: familiarisation of equipment required, locating anatomical landmarks, practical procedures and pitfalls.

2. VASCULAR ACCESS
This workshop will focus on supporting with emergency vascular access when venous cannulation proves difficult including:

  • Intraosseous devices such as:

    • Cook™ needle,

    • EZIO™

    • BIG™ and FAST1™

  • Cannulation “tricks of the trade”

  • And will feature: familiarisation of equipment required and associated hazards, insertion technique, required modifications to infusion methods pitfalls.

3. THORACIC WORKSHOP
This workshop will focus on the recognition and treatment of life-threatening thoracic conditions such as tension pneumothorax including:

  • Needle decompression

  • Emergency chest drain insertion

  • And will feature: clinical assessment of the chest, locating anatomical landmarks, practical procedures and pitfalls.

  • Allied healthcare professionals caring for the acutely ill
