Perspectives on Death and Dying Perspectives on Death and Dying
June L Leishman PhD, MEd (Hons), Post Grad Dip Ed, Cert HE Psychology, Cert HE Social Psychology RNT RCNT RMN and James Moir PhD, MEd (Hons), BEd

ISBN: 9781905539215 • July 2009 • M&K Publishing • 148 pages • illustrated

In the past, most people encountered death at a relatively young age. Dying relatives were cared for at home, and mortality rates were higher. Today, there is much less familiarity with death, which increasingly takes place in hospitals, hospices and nursing homes. This wide-ranging and enlightening book offers an exploration of death and dying as human conditions that impact on the individual, their significant others and those involved with their care and well-being. It is aimed at medical and healthcare staff, social workers and counsellors, as well as social sciences and health psychology students, professional health and social care educationalists, and anyone with an interest in this topic. Drawing on aspects of social anthropology, history, and the social and behavioural sciences, the book examines the customs, attitudes and beliefs surrounding death and dying. Emphasis is placed on the unique experience of death for each individual, and the book highlights the challenges faced by those who work with people who are dying or those who have experienced loss through death. In addition, each chapter ends with some reflective questions that allow the reader to consider certain issues at a more personal level.

Contents include:
The loneliness of dying • Developments in end-of-life care • Death, dying and the dead body • Death and the challenge of ageing • A dying language • Making a case for death education • Death, social change and lifestyle in the UK • The End

Childhood and teenage pregnancy continues to pose significant social and health concerns within the UK and beyond. It is an issue that has implications for individuals across a range of professions and disciplines.

This book is written for nurses, midwives, doctors, social workers and teachers, as well as students of sexual and reproductive health and welfare.

It highlights some of the issues faced by sexually active young people and those who work with them. It will also be useful to general readers with a broad interest in the area, or the topic of particular chapters, which are structured to allow readers to ‘dip into’ topics as necessary. However we would encourage readers to read the book as a whole for a broader understanding of the issues.

Contents include:
• The range and scope of early age sexual activity
• A child of our time
• Adolescent risk-taking in sexual behaviours
• Pharmacological contraceptive prescribing for young people
• Promoting sexual health in primary schools
• Leanne: A snapshot of teenage sexual experience
• Local initiatives: A sexual health doctor’s experience
• The future’s fine – or is it?

Inter-professional Approaches to Young Fathers Inter-professional Approaches to Young Fathers
Edited by Dr Jane Reeves, BA Hons, CQSW, MPhil, PhD.,
Research Lead, Department of Family Care and Mental Health, School of Health and Social Care, University of Greenwich

ISBN: 9781905539291 • September 2008 • M&K Update • 248 pages • illustrations

With one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe, young fatherhood, as a site of economic and personal adversity, has become a focus of concern in Britain during the late 1990’s. However, despite this policy interest there is surprisingly little British empirical evidence to review.

One of the aims of the book is to draw together contemporary research evidence, social theory and policy which may effect how practitioners, students and academics conceptualise and work with young fathers. Consequently, each chapter illustrates the points it makes using discrete evidence from that particular field. Moreover, in order to make this process more ‘user friendly’ each chapter provides a summary of this literature and evidence. Finally, in order to make the book come alive it draws on case studies, which are drawn, variously, from two studies conducted by the editor.

Contents include:
Contextualising the evidence: Young fathers, family and professional support • The legislative and policy context of young fathers and their children • ‘I’ve got to release it’: sexual health and young men • A father is born: the role of the midwife in involving young fathers in the birth and early parenting of their children • Safeguarding young fathers and their children • The role of fathers in their children’s lives • Recklessness, rescue and

Edited by Professor Colin R. Martin RN BSc PhD YCAP
CPsychol CSci, AFBPsS, Chair in Mental Health, University of the West of Scotland, Ayr, Scotland

ISBN: 9781905539161 • November 2008 • published by M&K Update • 416 pages • illustrations

Colin Martin has brought together an excellent set of contributors to produce a truly comprehensive text that will ensure all interested professionals can not only update their knowledge but also better understand each other’s roles and how best to help patients and clients through shared working to achieve a common goal of better health. This book is not just for people who see themselves as having a primary role in the field, but also for those – teachers, the police and family members – who live daily with its effects - Professor Dame Betty Kershaw, University of Sheffield, UK

Alcohol dependency represents an enduring problem for both the individual and wider society. Despite contemporary media coverage on increasingly dangerous levels of drinking in the United Kingdom, the fact remains that excessive alcohol consumption has been a distinguishing feature of Western society for generations. This book is arranged by a number of themed parts, largely representing the key areas in the process of facilitating access to effective clinical management. The book will also be of interest to the wider public who have an interest or concern in relation to alcohol dependency.

Contents include:
Part 1: Identification • Part 2: Medical interventions • Part 3: Psychological interventions
Part 4: Contemporary issues in the identification and treatment of alcohol dependency

Music makes a difference Music makes a difference
A practical guide to developing music sessions with people with learning disabilities
INCLUDES a pull out music sheet section
Dr Toni Bunnell, Lecturer, Department of Applied Health Studies, University of Hull

ISBN: 9781905539792

February 2007 • M&K Update Ltd • 44 pages • illustrated

Music has been shown to be of indisputable value when dealing with people with learning disabilities. This book highlights specific ways in which music can be used to improve the quality of peoples' lives. It also includes a pull-out music sheets section.
The book sets out in clear chapters a guide for starting and running music sessions with people with learning difficulties. The chapters on setting up a group and tailoring sessions provide a good starting point for people inexperienced in running groups for people with learning difficulties and would also provide a useful working base for leaders who want to expand their work with people with learning difficulties to include music.
Toni Bunnell is very experienced in both observing and running music sessions. This is reflected in the practical ideas section which provides useful activities which both the new and experienced leader may find relevant and inspiring.
It suggests that individuals who are either not professional music therapists or accomplished musicians can be successful in running music groups and this guide forms a sound basis to anyone inspired in providing musical activities in this area.
