Nutritional Care of Older People Workbook Nutritional Care of Older People Workbook
Amanda Taylor BSc Hons, PGDip, Registered Dietician

ISBN: 9781905539055 • April 2008 • M&K Update Ltd • 64 pages

Good nutrition contributes to the health of elderly people and their ability to maintain their independence, mobility and overall quality of life for longer. Ultimately, these factors may also lessen the burden of health costs. The public and the press are very interested in food, especially food in hospitals and other institutions. The food that is provided in hospitals and care homes can define the whole experience of the organisation for the patient (or service user). They may or may not be able to tell the difference between good or bad treatment, but can always tell if the food is good or bad.

This workbook has been written to heighten awareness of nutrition as care and encourage readers to take ownership of ensuring that good practice is implemented on a day to day basis. You will find that completing the exercises will improve your understanding of what nutritional care means to your client group whether they are in hospital, residential care or in their own home.

Contents include:

What is a healthy diet? • Malnutrition and monitoring patients who may be at risk of malnutrition • Food fortification and nutritional supplements • Special dietary needs • Ethnicity, religion and culture • relevant policy guidelines and standards • Appendices: Diet History Chart • Food Record Chart • Weight Chart • Checklist for Best Practice – social care and hospital wards

Nutrition for Children - A no-nonsense guide for parents Nutrition for Children - A no-nonsense guide for parents
Dr Wyndham Boobier, PhD, MSc, BA
Registered Nutritionist, Fellow of the Royal Society of Health
Member of the Institute of Food Science and Technology

ISBN: 9781905539260 • June 2008 • Published by M&K Update Ltd • 112 pages

How nice it would be to find a book about children’s nutrition that was written for parents by a parent. Such a book would be straightforward, easy to understand, and would not be full of obscure facts and statistics. Written by a father and nutritionist with over five years experience giving lectures on nutrition and health promotion to parents and children of all ages, this is such a book. There is no claim for it to be the most comprehensive ‘text’ on nutrition, but it is written for parents and carers of children who are truly concerned about their health.

Contents include:
• Diet and Health – the Basic Building Blocks • Vitamins • Requirements of Pre-School Children • Minerals • Healthy Eating for School-Aged Children • Physical Activity • Healthy Eating for Adolescents • Reading Food Labels • Healthy Eating - The Balanced Diet • Diabetes – Some Basics

Plus:
Estimated Average Energy Requirements • Smoothie Recipes • Body Mass Index and Waist to Hip Ratio • Examples of Good Snacking Foods • Glycaemic Index of Selected Foods

About the author
Dr Boobier is one of those unusual individuals who has remained at the cutting edge of food science and nutrition through combining his experiences as a university academic and a senior manager in food production. His lecturing on nutritional health throughout the schools of Wales has been highly acclaimed and there is always a keen gathering of schools seeking to use his outstanding communication skills. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, a Master’s degree in Nutritional Biochemistry and a PhD in Functional Food Developments and Selected Heart Disease Risk Factors. He is a Registered Nutritionist, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Health, a Chartered Biologist and a consultant to the baking industry. It was the experience gained from meeting the people and talking about nutrition with individual families that inspired Dr Boobier to write this book. This is a gem of knowledge that has been cooked to perfection for the public's consumption.
