Music makes a difference Music makes a difference
A practical guide to developing music sessions with people with learning disabilities
INCLUDES a pull out music sheet section
Dr Toni Bunnell, Lecturer, Department of Applied Health Studies, University of Hull

ISBN: 9781905539792

February 2007 • M&K Update Ltd • 44 pages • illustrated

Music has been shown to be of indisputable value when dealing with people with learning disabilities. This book highlights specific ways in which music can be used to improve the quality of peoples' lives. It also includes a pull-out music sheets section.
The book sets out in clear chapters a guide for starting and running music sessions with people with learning difficulties. The chapters on setting up a group and tailoring sessions provide a good starting point for people inexperienced in running groups for people with learning difficulties and would also provide a useful working base for leaders who want to expand their work with people with learning difficulties to include music.
Toni Bunnell is very experienced in both observing and running music sessions. This is reflected in the practical ideas section which provides useful activities which both the new and experienced leader may find relevant and inspiring.
It suggests that individuals who are either not professional music therapists or accomplished musicians can be successful in running music groups and this guide forms a sound basis to anyone inspired in providing musical activities in this area.

Forensic Mental Health Care Forensic Mental Health Care
A Case Study Approach.

Dave Mercer BA(Hons), MA, RMN, PGCE, Lecturer, Department of Nursing, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.
Tom Mason BSc(Hons), PhD, RGN, RMN, RNMH, Senior Lecturer, Department of Nursing, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.
Mick McKeown BA(Hons), PhD, RGN, RMN, RNM, DPSN(Thom), Lecturer, Department of Nursing, University of Liverpool; Practitioner, North Mersey Community NHS Trust, Liverpool, UK.
Ged McCann BPhil, MPH, RMN, DPSN(Thom), County Development Officer for Mentally Disordered Offenders, North Yorkshire Health Authority; Lecturer, University of York, York, UK.

Forensic mental health care is concerned with the care of people who exhibit extreme anti-social behaviours such as sexual abuse, violence, murder, fire setting, self-harming behaviours and substance misuse. In many cases, these
behaviours are indicative of severe psychiatric pathology. Nurses and others who work with such people require high degrees of skill and self-awareness. Such nurses are found in special hospitals, regional secure units, prisons, psychiatric hospitals and in community teams. This book will adopt the novel approach of addressing the most common anti-social behaviours encountered by professionals, and address them in a case-study approach. In doing so, the authors will be able to demonstrate theory and research-based elements which underpin education in true-to-life practice situations, an approach which particularly lends itself to psychiatry. The case studies will either be real cases or an amalgam of real ones. The case study elements of each chapter will comprise around 60-70 per cent of the text, with discussion of implications and conclusions providing the rest.

Mental Health Law for Nurses Mental Health Law for Nurses
Bridget Dimond.
F. Barker.

In the UK, treatment of the mentally ill is governed by two major pieces of legislation: the Mental Health Act (of 1983) and the Code of Practice (S.118), published in 1990 and reviewed periodically by the Secretary of State. Because nurses in any speciality may encounter patients suffering from mental disorder, it is extremely useful that they have an understanding of the legal principles involved. Mental Health Law for Nurses provides such an introduction and practical guide to the law and directives embodied in treatment of persons exhibiting mental disorder. Additionally, for those nurses specialising in direct care of the mentally ill or handicapped, this book provides an easy reference and relevance to their daily practice.

Forensic mental health has been the subject of intense interest in recent years. Developments in policy and education and the emergence of specialist qualifications in the area, as well as public interest and scrutiny have meant that practitioners are examining and developing their practice. Publications in this area have either looked at the theoretical background or focused on individual client problems. This book addresses the whole context of effective practice and its development in this challenging area of care.

Social Inclusion and Recovery: A Model for Mental Health Practice Social Inclusion and Recovery: A Model for Mental Health Practice
Dr Julie Repper, Senior Research Fellow, University of Sheffield & Lead Research Nurse, Community Health Sheffield, UK. Dr Rachel Perkins, Clinical Director of General Adult Mental Health Services & Consultant Clinical Psychologist, South West London and St. George's Mental Health NHS Trust, UK.

Although it is widely agreed that the experiences of service users have much to offer mental health professionals, the majority of books for this group focus on either conditions or different types of service provision (acute, community). This book is different. It takes as its starting point the lived experience of recovery, which is the process whereby individuals can be helped to understand and come to terms with their illness. The role and actions of mental health professionals is explored as part of the process of recovery. The major part of the book will focus on ways in which direct care staff can assist people with mental health problems, reflecting the accounts of the nature and type of assistance which have been valuable, and the ways in which such help can best be offered. It addresses two key components of recovery access and inclusion to life opportunities and acceptance.
