Nutritional Care of Older People Workbook Nutritional Care of Older People Workbook
Amanda Taylor BSc Hons, PGDip, Registered Dietician

ISBN: 9781905539055 • April 2008 • M&K Update Ltd • 64 pages

Good nutrition contributes to the health of elderly people and their ability to maintain their independence, mobility and overall quality of life for longer. Ultimately, these factors may also lessen the burden of health costs. The public and the press are very interested in food, especially food in hospitals and other institutions. The food that is provided in hospitals and care homes can define the whole experience of the organisation for the patient (or service user). They may or may not be able to tell the difference between good or bad treatment, but can always tell if the food is good or bad.

This workbook has been written to heighten awareness of nutrition as care and encourage readers to take ownership of ensuring that good practice is implemented on a day to day basis. You will find that completing the exercises will improve your understanding of what nutritional care means to your client group whether they are in hospital, residential care or in their own home.

Contents include:

What is a healthy diet? • Malnutrition and monitoring patients who may be at risk of malnutrition • Food fortification and nutritional supplements • Special dietary needs • Ethnicity, religion and culture • relevant policy guidelines and standards • Appendices: Diet History Chart • Food Record Chart • Weight Chart • Checklist for Best Practice – social care and hospital wards

The Management of COPD In Primary and Secondary Care The Management of COPD In Primary and Secondary Care
Edited by Dr David Lynes Head of Education, Respiratory Training UK, Merseyside

ISBN: 9781905539284 • December 2007 • M&K Update Ltd Paperback • 200 pages • illustrated

COPD is preventable and treatable, yet its low profile and late presentation means that many people are not diagnosed until the disease has progressed to a moderate or severe stage, where interventions are less effective. The education of all healthcare professionals is therefore essential in improving care for this patient group. It is not simply a disease of the airways; it also has cognitive and social aspects and if care is to be optimised it needs to be approached holistically. This book addresses a wide range of issues and includes a chapter on the patient’s perspective, written by a patient, which gives useful insights. It merits a place in the healthcare library.
Gill Hall, Chief Executive, Respiratory Education UK

Pathological processes, aetiology and natural history • The patient’s perspective • Assessment and diagnosis • Pharmacological management of chronic disease • Managing an exacerbation in primary care • Management of respiratory failure caused by exacerbations • Smoking and smoking cessation • Holistic issues • Domiciliary oxygen therapy • Pulmonary rehabilitation

It is constantly suggested that, as podiatrists, we need to research, but what does this really mean? This question can be particularly problematic in a profession such as podiatry, where there has not been a strong research basis for our practice in the past. Information is no longer accepted at face value, but instead is scrutinised, criticised, questioned and used to raise other questions. Podiatrists are being prepared to understand, use and undertake their own research. The book will appeal to podiatry practitioners, lecturers and students. It is based on a popular series of articles that appeared in Podiatry Now, which have been updated and edited into this stand-alone resource.

Contents include:
The why, who and what of podiatry research • Finding the funding for research • Defining the research question • Obtaining ethical approval • Finding the literature for research projects • Numerical data analysis • Finding new evidence • research design • Qualitative analysis • Action research • Disseminating research findings • Data collection • Closing the loop putting research findings into practice

Issues in Heart Failure Nursing Issues in Heart Failure Nursing
Edited by: Chris Jones MSc, BA, RN, RNT, PGCE, ENB 100, Senior Lecturer, Faculty Of Health, Edge Hill University, University Hospital Aintree
Foreword: Professor Martin Cowie

ISBN: 9781905539000

September 2006 • M&K Update Ltd • 155 pages

The number of people suffering from this debilitating condition is predicted to grow exponentially over the next decade. This has serious implications for the health services. Investigating heart failure is not cheap even where facilities exist. The drugs used, though effective often remarkably so are also costly as are mandate laboratory investigations. These again are not cheap. People with heart failure require frequent admissions to hospital and occupy many beds and much staff attention. All of these factors are set to increase over the next decades.

This eclectic collection of papers tackles many of the issues that concern those who care for individuals with heart failure; organisation of services, exercise, palliative care amongst them, but also novel and rarely discussed issue.

Music makes a difference Music makes a difference
A practical guide to developing music sessions with people with learning disabilities
INCLUDES a pull out music sheet section
Dr Toni Bunnell, Lecturer, Department of Applied Health Studies, University of Hull

ISBN: 9781905539792

February 2007 • M&K Update Ltd • 44 pages • illustrated

Music has been shown to be of indisputable value when dealing with people with learning disabilities. This book highlights specific ways in which music can be used to improve the quality of peoples' lives. It also includes a pull-out music sheets section.
The book sets out in clear chapters a guide for starting and running music sessions with people with learning difficulties. The chapters on setting up a group and tailoring sessions provide a good starting point for people inexperienced in running groups for people with learning difficulties and would also provide a useful working base for leaders who want to expand their work with people with learning difficulties to include music.
Toni Bunnell is very experienced in both observing and running music sessions. This is reflected in the practical ideas section which provides useful activities which both the new and experienced leader may find relevant and inspiring.
It suggests that individuals who are either not professional music therapists or accomplished musicians can be successful in running music groups and this guide forms a sound basis to anyone inspired in providing musical activities in this area.

Self Assessment in Limb X-ray Interpretation Self Assessment in Limb X-ray Interpretation
Author: Karen Sakthivel-Wainford, Advanced Radiographer Practitioner, H.D.C.R.(R) ,PG Cert, MSc.

ISBN: 9781905539130

October 2006 • M&K Update Ltd • 250 pages • 120 illustrations

Aimed at: Radiographers, Nurse Practitioners and Junior Doctors
The number of professions that review and formulate a written report/opinion on trauma radiographs has increased over the last ten years to include nurse practitioners, radiographers and radiographer practitioners.
Radiographer practitioners post-training formulate first and second (final) reports, depending on training and which Trust they work in.
For many years radiographers have been 'red dotting' casualty radiographs, although now with increased knowledge obtained from the many 'red dot' courses available.
Nurse practitioners, in order to provide a complete service to their patient, are also commenting on trauma radiographs.
This book is intended to be like sitting in on a reporting session with a radiologist or radiographer practitioner, where you are asked to report/comment on the radiograph, but also asked some questions and given feedback. It is intended to support whatever training you have done whether it be reporting, 'red dotting' or commenting. It can be used as a revision book, or to help in preparation for an assessment. However you use it, I hope it will encourage you to read more, research more into musculoskeletal trauma and its radiographic appearance; for it is a fascinating topic and there is always more to learn.
