The Management of COPD In Primary and Secondary Care The Management of COPD In Primary and Secondary Care
Edited by Dr David Lynes Head of Education, Respiratory Training UK, Merseyside

ISBN: 9781905539284 • December 2007 • M&K Update Ltd Paperback • 200 pages • illustrated

COPD is preventable and treatable, yet its low profile and late presentation means that many people are not diagnosed until the disease has progressed to a moderate or severe stage, where interventions are less effective. The education of all healthcare professionals is therefore essential in improving care for this patient group. It is not simply a disease of the airways; it also has cognitive and social aspects and if care is to be optimised it needs to be approached holistically. This book addresses a wide range of issues and includes a chapter on the patient’s perspective, written by a patient, which gives useful insights. It merits a place in the healthcare library.
Gill Hall, Chief Executive, Respiratory Education UK

CONTENTS INCLUDE:
Pathological processes, aetiology and natural history • The patient’s perspective • Assessment and diagnosis • Pharmacological management of chronic disease • Managing an exacerbation in primary care • Management of respiratory failure caused by exacerbations • Smoking and smoking cessation • Holistic issues • Domiciliary oxygen therapy • Pulmonary rehabilitation

Arterial Blood Gas Analysis: - An easy learning guide Arterial Blood Gas Analysis: - An easy learning guide
Fiona Foxall, MA, BSc, Head of Continuing Education, University of Wolverhampton

ISBN: 9781905539048 • August 2008 • M&K Update Ltd Paperback • 96 pages • illustrated

Blood gas analysis is one of the most frequently requested blood tests when caring for the critically ill patient, as it provides very valuable information about the respiratory and acid–base status of the patient (Shoulders-Odom, 2000). However, many healthcare professionals find it difficult to get to grips with blood gas analysis. It often seems complex and daunting, but if you work your way through this book and carry out all the exercises, you will soon become con?dent and competent at analysing blood gases and will understand all the information that initially seemed so complicated. Blood gas analysis is a skill, which requires continuous practice, so once you have completed this workbook keep analysing blood gases as often as you can and discuss your findings with your mentor, until it becomes easy.

Forthcoming titles in the Easy Learning Guide series:
• Haemodynamic monitoring
• Cardiac arrhythmia recognition
• Artificial ventilation
• Fluid and electrolyte balance and control
• Neurological observations and their significance
