Many common problems in clinical medicine and general practice relate to arterial and venous thrombosis. Thrombosis in veins (i.e. venous thromboembolism, (VTE)) is a permanent problem in various cancers and following surgery, especially orthopaedic. It has recently been estimated that death due to VTE in the European Community exceeds that AIDS, breast cancer, prostate cancer and road traffic accidents combined. This new workbook aims to develop a clear understanding of VTE.
Contents include:
What are deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and why are they important?
Who is at risk of these conditions and why?
Recognising and confirming VTE
What have we got to treat these conditions?
Clinical practice of anticoagulation
Use of LMWH

Haemodynamic Monitoring & Manipulation
An easy learning guide
2nd in the NEW SERIES FROM M&K Easy Learning Guides
Fiona Foxall, MA, BSc, Head of Continuing Education, School of Health, University of Wolverhampton
ISBN: 9781905539468 March 2009 M&K Update Ltd Paperback 144 pages illustrated
The adequacy of the cardio respiratory system can generally be gauged from basic clinical signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and depth, skin texture and colour, use of accessory muscles of respiration and mental status. These basic signs should never be ignored, but in critical illness, basic clinical assessment alone may be unreliable and misleading. Therefore further monitoring techniques are usually required.
Cardiac output and the circulation can be manipulated by fluid and drug administration to ensure good oxygen delivery to the tissues but in order to do this, ongoing monitoring is required. Many healthcare professionals find it difficult to get to grips with the more complex forms of haemodynamic monitoring and the use of inotropic and vasoactive agents; indeed these things can seem rather daunting.
If you work your way through this book and carry out the exercises, you will soon become more confident and competent about haemodynamic monitoring and manipulation as well as understanding all the information that initially seems so complicated.

Blood gas analysis is one of the most frequently requested blood tests when caring for the critically ill patient, as it provides very valuable information about the respiratory and acidbase status of the patient (Shoulders-Odom, 2000). However, many healthcare professionals find it difficult to get to grips with blood gas analysis. It often seems complex and daunting, but if you work your way through this book and carry out all the exercises, you will soon become con?dent and competent at analysing blood gases and will understand all the information that initially seemed so complicated. Blood gas analysis is a skill, which requires continuous practice, so once you have completed this workbook keep analysing blood gases as often as you can and discuss your findings with your mentor, until it becomes easy.
